Hydraulic brakes are generally considered to be superior to mechanical brakes for ebikes in a number of ways. Here are a few reasons why:

    1. Better performance: Hydraulic brakes offer better modulation and control compared to mechanical brakes. This means that you can apply the brakes more smoothly and precisely, which is especially important when riding an ebike, which tends to be heavier and faster than a traditional bike.
    2. Increased power: Hydraulic brakes provide more stopping power than mechanical brakes, which is especially useful when riding an ebike, which tends to be heavier and faster than a traditional bike. This increased power can help to reduce the distance it takes to stop, which is especially important for safety.
    3. Improved durability: Hydraulic brakes are generally more durable than mechanical brakes, as they are less prone to wear and tear. This means that you can expect longer-lasting performance from your hydraulic brakes, which can save you time and money in the long run.
    4. Easier maintenance: Hydraulic brakes require less maintenance than mechanical brakes, as they have fewer moving parts and do not rely on cables. This makes them easier to service and maintain, which can save you time and hassle.
    5. Better adaptability: Hydraulic brakes are easier to adjust than mechanical brakes, which makes them more adaptable to different terrain and riding styles. This can be especially useful if you plan to ride your ebike on a variety of surfaces or in different weather conditions.

Overall, while both hydraulic and mechanical brakes have their pros and cons, hydraulic brakes tend to offer a number of advantages.

Overall, this is a pretty solid upgrade over the stock RadCity 3 cable brakes. They feel more solid, particularly with 205 pound me on the bike. IMHO, the RadCity 3 should have had hydraulic brakes by default, just given the weight – the 5 does. The line length is luckily pretty good for this model. Both the front and rear are a little long, but not so much that you can’t zip-tie everything back together – for me, not enough to think about trimming the line. I ran the rear line through the frame using the old cable line taped to it to fish it through, no issues at all. These were just about drop-in on this model, but just some things to be aware of:- The front caliper mounted using the stock bracket was just a hair too deep, so use a pair of washers to keep the top of the caliper from rubbing the rotor- I had to bleed the brakes a bit. They certainly stopped without it, but there was a little bit of air that probably got in during shipping. A universal bleed kit works just fine here, the mushroom bolt on the brake lever is where you attach- The rear caliper mounts without any adapter bracket- I’m not sure that you can adjust the reach on these levers, but for me they’re fine (and my hands are not large)Overall, I’m really happy that I upgraded to this brake kit. I feel a lot more confident braking from 20+ MPH, but also being able to slow down on steep downhills. Finally, Gareth is super helpful over email. While like zero documentation about these brakes exists online, it’s clear he’s spent a lot of time with these on others’ bikes and can get you un-stuck.

Easy to do challenge yourself and get the assembly required pack nothing worse ( for me anyway) having the bike frame covered in zip ties holding the rear brake line in place.?Piece of wire for hooking out the frame /and or long nose pliers.
